Midjourney Prompting Guide for Intentional Images

Image prompts are not instruction essays#

A language-model prompt often explains a task, audience, constraints, and output format. A Midjourney prompt describes the image to generate and may add references or parameters. Long procedural instructions can be less useful than a focused visual description.

Official prompt basics identify details such as subject, medium, environment, lighting, color, mood, and composition. Include the elements that matter to the concept and allow flexibility where variation is welcome.

Visual prompt anatomy#

A practical order is:

[subject and action], [medium or visual form], [environment], [lighting], [color palette], [mood], [composition and camera view] [parameters]

Example draft:

A compact solar-powered field radio on a weathered expedition desk, editorial product photograph, canvas tent at dawn, soft side light, muted olive and warm amber palette, practical and resilient mood, three-quarter close view with negative space on the left --ar 4:5

This is a starting point, not a tested best prompt. The final result still depends on the current model version, defaults, references, and iteration.

Short versus detailed prompts#

A short prompt gives Midjourney more freedom to apply defaults. Use it when exploration matters more than control.

A detailed prompt is useful when a campaign requires a specific composition, product relationship, color family, or space for copy.

More words do not automatically improve the image. Remove conflicting style terms and prioritize the few visual decisions that must survive.

Parameters and aspect ratio#

Official documentation states that parameters belong at the end of the text prompt. Spacing and syntax matter. Use the current Parameter List rather than relying on an old prompt copied from a gallery.

Aspect ratio controls the width-to-height relationship and should follow the intended placement: portrait for a vertical post, landscape for a banner, or another ratio required by the layout. A parameter changes generation behavior; it does not replace art direction.

After material product changes, recheck every parameter example against current documentation and the visible default version.

Suggested variation test#

Use one controlled concept and change only one variable at a time:

1. short prompt versus detailed prompt
2. square versus portrait aspect ratio
3. neutral lighting versus neon lighting
4. composition with and without explicit negative space
5. one excluded element using the current supported syntax

Record the exact prompt, version, settings, references, date, selected output, failure notes, and reviewer. Do not present a single attractive image as proof that a formula always works.

Common failure patterns#

• conflicting media or style descriptions
• important objects implied but not explicitly described
• text or logo requirements treated as guaranteed
• parameters placed inside the descriptive sentence
• copied legacy parameters that no longer match current documentation
• vague negative instructions without a clear positive composition
• claiming an image is legally safe, factual, or brand approved without review

Limitations and rights review#

Generated images can contain visual defects, unwanted text, inaccurate products, biased representation, or elements too similar to protected material. Review the current product terms, commercial-use conditions, privacy settings, and the rights associated with any uploaded reference image. Obtain brand, legal, and accessibility review before publishing campaign assets.
